CSCS Cards and You: Why you need the right CSCS card?
Employers are increasingly making CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) cards mandatory to enable you to work on a construction site. This ensures that the site complies with current health & safety practices that affect workers so they understand and adhere to these. You should also be aware that firstly, regular checks are carried out on CSCS card holders either by using a hand held scanner or checking a central database to ensure the card is valid.
Secondly, if you are holding the wrong type for the type of job you are doing, for example, if you have a CSCS Green card but you are of card in fact a painter, plasterer or supervisor, you might be asked to leave the site.

How do CSCS Cards Work?
CSCS Cards work as your identification document which shows your level of experience, your skill level and your knowledge as well. It acts as a proof that you are aware of the various health hazards related to the construction sites and how to prevent them. Moreover, your CSCS Cards also help your employers check your qualification details against the CSCS database which stores all your information. You card can also be used by your employer to take your attendance or give you access to the site. They are as much useful for independent workers like plasterers, bricklayers, painters, plumbers etc too. Their customers identify them as serious, responsible and adept professionals, thanks to their CSCS Cards.

CSCS Card Validity and Renewal
Most CSCS Card come with 5 years validity, except for the temporary ones which have different validity periods each. All of these cards can be renewed within the period of 6 months before and 6 months after the expiration date, given they are not labourer or temporary cards, which cannot be renewed. Find out the CSCS Health, Safety & Environment Test required getting the card you want. You need to score 42 passing marks in the HS&E Test to get CSCS Card.

How to get a CSCS card?
Once you have a CSCS card, it is valid for 5 years; however trainee cards may be valid for 1 or 3 years. You have a one year window to renew your CSCS card; from 6 months prior to expiry to 6 months after that. Make sure you do it within this window or this will just make things extremely difficult for you later on.
Once your card expires you will have to resit for Health Safety & Environmental test because new standards may have been introduced since your CSCS card was issued. You will also need to gain an NVQ qualifications.
